Question:

How do I adjust the reaction speed of the start menu; I see no reason for there to be a delay when I click on the Start Menu.

Answer:

Effects are pretty, but why have such a long delay for the menue and it's submenus to open? Thankfully, the Windows default speed can be adjusted with a quick registry entry.

The following instructions use a program called RegEdit. The information contained in the Registry controls your computer's basic operation. This program allows you to modify the computer's Registry. It is also advised that you backup/ export the registry: follow these steps:

RegEdit is a two-pane Explorer-like program that navigates the System Registry in much the same fashion as Explorer navigates your hard drive and folders. There are several "Root" keys shown at startup. Among these is one called "HKEY_CURRENT_USER". To the left of this root key will be a plus sign in a small box. Click the plus sign and a series of sub-keys will expand downward. Next find the key called "Control Panel". (It might be capitalized differently. That's okay. "CONTROL PANEL" is the same as "Control Panel" is the same as "CoNtRoL pAnEl".) Click the plus sign to the left of the "Control Panel" entry. Another layer of sub-keys expands downward.

In the bottom bar of the RegEdit program is the complete "path" opened. Keep clicking on plus signs until the entry reads:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop

In the right panel, look for the Value Name: MenuShowDelay.

If MenuShowDelay exists: double-click it and enter the amount of delay you prefer; the Windows default value is 400. Then Exit the Registry and Reboot the computer to activate the new setting.

If MenuShowDelay does not exist: The Value Name: MenuShowDelay will have to be created. Right-click in the right pane and select "New: String Value" and type the new data type name: MenuShowDelay. Then double-click it and enter the amount of delay under "Value Data" you prefer; the Windows default value is 400. Then Exit the Registry and Reboot the computer to activate the new setting.

Note: As mentioned above, the default value is 400. Set it to 0 and the delay is gone, but it will be be nearly impossible to move the mouse fast enough not to activate "All Programs" if you mouse over it in route to your final selection. It's easy to train yourself to move the pointer to the right after clicking Start to avoid activating "All Programs". Pick a number that suits your style and make the change, then test it until you find a good compromise between speed and usability.
